So you’ve started your affiliate marketing journey and don’t know where to start. Great! This guide will show you how to start affiliate marketing for beginners in 2021.
So what is affiliate marketing? As the name suggests, it is marketing products from other companies and obtaining revenue from the products you promote. In short, you will be digitally showing your product, either on a website or other platform and promoting it. When a visitor visits the promoted products website, through your link, and buys, you get a commission.
Many people feel affiliate marketing is unique in that you never actually carry any product. You can start with almost zero overhead cost as well. In addition, it doesn’t take long to get started. To be an affiliate marketer, you will have the easiest/hardest job on the planet. Most people find the idea extremely attractive, yet don’t know how to start affiliate marketing. I trust you’ll love this beginners guide to affiliate marketing in 2021 for a quick and easy start.

Now that you have done that, let’s begin!
Step 1: Have an Affiliate Marketing Platform (Your Home)
To begin with affiliate marketing you’ll need some platform in which to promote your product. This can be a website, a blog, YouTube, Facebook, Instagram or whatever. Myself, I use all of the above, using my blog as a foundation for everything else. While you don’t have to have a website, it really helps.
If you don’t have a website, no problem! You can stick to a social media platform or create your own WordPress blog for free. Many affiliate marketers simply just promote using YouTube as their base of operations. If you aren’t tech savvy, but still want the benefits of a blog, you can commission one to be done at FIVERR for a fraction of the cost. While you are here, see my list of best affiliate marketing plugins for WordPress for ideas on how to set up your blog.
Although you can go without a blog or website, I highly encourage you do so. WordPress blogs are extremely user friendly and you can implement all sorts of tools to promote your products and get ranked. If you have a blog, try to write in it 2-4 times a week. But be patient, it takes time.
Step 2: Choose Your Niche
Ok, so this really should’ve been first, but choosing your niche is extremely important. It’s also important to identify micro-niches within your niche and opportunities for promotion. Learn more about about how to choose a niche for affiliate marketing here.
You’ll want to choose a niche that you have the ability to compete in. When deciding on one, you just have to be consistent within your platform. For example you don’t want to write about your love of baseball one day, then promote cryptocurrency the next. You’ll want to have laser focus when creating your content.
Step 3: Find a Product to Promote
Now comes the fun part – deciding what to promote. When you sign up for an affiliate program, the respective company will give you your own unique hyperlink to promote, or “hop link”. You can find unlimited things to promote, from books, to yard supplies, to digital software and more. This how to start affiliate marketing for beginners guide would not be complete without giving you the best places to find these promotions however.
- ClickBank.com – Setting up a Click Bank account is easy and a great way to find digital products to promote. It has been one of the largest generators of revenue for affiliates for over a decade. I was even promoting products from Click Bank in 2005! Simply set up an account “nickname” and visit the affiliate marketplace. Search for the product you want and click the promote button. From there you’ll be able to put in your nickname and they will automatically create a link for you to use to promote whichever product you like. Simple right?
- CommissionJunction.com – Commission Junction or CJ.com is another affiliate marketing platform in which you can search for a variety of products to sell from majors companies.
- Amazon.com – That’s right, even Amazon has its own affiliate program. You can literally promote anything in their marketplace for a commission. The best part is that whatever anyone else buys within their cart at the time, you also get credit for. Cool yeah?
- ShareASale.com – ShareASale.com is very much similar to Commission Junction and another marketplace that I have used.
STEP 4: Get a Landing Page
While not necessarily needed, we decided to put this on our “How to start affiliate marketing beginners guide” because of it’s importance. While programs like ClickBank.com often provide you with a landing page, they are also capturing the names and emails of your visitors for future promotions and upgrades and news. Having a good landing page, allows you to capture your leads information prior to giving your traffic away. You’ll want to capture names and emails using a an autoresponder service like AWeber.com.
Having a landing page and an email signup form allows you create a list of subscribers that you can email when you post new content or when something new and cool comes out. You’ll want to connect with your visitors and this is one way to do so. Plus, if you are an affiliate marketing enthusiast like me, you’ll want to help others do the same… hence the reasoning behind this post.

Step 5: Create Content – LOTS
Content creation is literally the lifeforce of every affiliate marketer. The more content you create, the more likely you are to be found. Think of it as “digital real estate”. The search engines love it, social media loves it, your visitors love it and so should you! Creating quality content each day, or as often as possible, when done right, will ensure your success as an affiliate marketer. Remember, “Content is King!”
The type of content that I would focus on would be “How-To’s” and “Reviews”. People come to the Internet looking for answers. Your job is to provide them with those solutions to their problems, and while doing so, turn a profit. Your video or blog post could be something like “How to potty train a puppy” or “dog training book reviews”… see how this works? Then you find a product that would be a good fit for someone looking for those specific things.
Step 6: Promote, Promote, Promote!
Step 6 is all about promoting your content. You can do this via paid advertising using Facebook ads or solo ads. I highly recommend Udimi for promoting a landing page or getting your first sales. It’s cost effective and reliable. You can get a Free Udimi Coupon here. When doing paid promotions, be sure to not send them to a basic blog page, but to a landing page or straight through an affiliate link. You don’t want to confuse your visitors by giving them an indirect path to your product or service.
Advertising also comes free. By using off-page search engine optimization (SEO), you can have other websites link to yours for better search engine results. In addition, it gives your visitors another way to find you. You can also harness the power of social media to promote your products and website as well. Search in Google “How to promote my website” for more ideas. This is a long topic so I won’t get in to it much here.
